Bookshop Description (Est. 2021)
Afrori Books is Sussex's only bookshop that specialises in books by black authors. With every genre available, this is the place to come to diversify your bookshelf. Founded by Carolynn Bain (a bookseller rising star 2022) and managed by her daughter Oliviyah the bookshop is a family run business that aims to amplify black voices in the city and the nation.
The multi-award winning bookshop in the North Laines, the heart of Brighton, has become a central point for events and some of the best authors in publishing.
Afrori craft mornings run every Saturday throughout the year and they have a varied selection of book clubs including their extremely popular Supper Club where a small group of guests enjoy a two course Caribbean meal with a best selling author.
Afrori Books is the co founder of Brighton Book Festival, a weekend festival that takes place in June each year
Guest speakers this year include; Kit De Waal, Patrice Lawrence, Yvonne Bailey Smith, Amen Alonge, Guvna B, Jordan Stephens, Donna Lancaster, Dorothy Koomson, Salena Godden, Caleb Azumah Nelson, Scarlet Brade, Yomi Sode, Nikki May, Tola Okogwu, Ellie Clements and many more
They work with a number of schools arranging shop visits, pop up shops and author visits. They also run Brighton's only Anti Racist Kids (ARK) club in the shop and at a number of schools in Sussex.
The shop is committed to making books accessible to everyone. They welcome anyone who has the need to take advantage of their pay it forward scheme which allows customers to attend events or purchase books at no cost to themselves.
We also have an even bigger range in our online shop at www.afroribooks.co.uk or you can find us on bookshop.org
