February's Bookshop of the Month

Westwood Books

Congratulations to Westwood Books, our Bookshop of the Month for February.

This month we're celebrating Westwood Books which is located in England's official Book Town, Sedbergh in Cumbria. The largest bookshop in the Yorkshire Dales, in its former lives the site has been home to a factory, a local cinema and a village hall, before opening as a bookshop in 2006. Heather and Paul Thomas, the current owners, took over the business in 2020.

With more than 70,000 books in stock, mainly second-hand with some new and some antiquarian, there's something for every reader, with a dedicated Collector's Book Room for the rarest books of all. Alongside books, visitors can find maps, literary themed gifts and cards, and can enjoy a cup of coffee from the machine after a lengthy browse!

In 2009, Westwood Books was named one of The Guardian's Top Ten Second-hand Bookshops, and author Bill Bryson has described the shop as 'large and excellent'.

The team use Caboodle regularly to promote their events. In 2023, local Caboodlers were invited to join authors including Robin Ince, Caro Giles and J.C. Briggs for instore talks and signings, while 2024 has already seen the shop hosting Karen Bentley-Brown to talk about the magic of journalling, and Francesca Beauman from Persephone Books.

Heather tells us how Caboodle has helped her and Paul to re-establish their events programme in the wake of the pandemic:

"We use Caboodle to list all of our events. We took on the bookshop at the beginning of the pandemic when events weren't really possible, and so Caboodle has really helped us spread the word about what we're doing now. It's especially good to know that it's reaching people who are already committed  to supporting  bookshops. It's simple to use too which is always a bonus when you're running a business and juggling so many other things."

Congratulations to the team, who have received a delicious food and red wine hamper to help celebrate.
